Check out those middle school numbers!  And look at that 12th Grade number.  These are from a Met Life Study.

I wish you had added LIBRARY in your survey. Libraries and librarians are often overlooked when collecting data and yet you will find that many kids never forget their librarian. Libraries serve as a safe space for many kids who feel they don’t belong anywhere else in the school.

It’d be interesting to see those data crosstabulated, because as is, they are hard to reconcile. The 40 “general” teachers at the top of the second list are likely not in a departmentalized setting, yet most kids cited a secondary school teacher in the first table. Hmmmmm…

Any ideas on why the study turned out this way? Is it that the kids at this age are most impressionable and open to someone making a difference? Or is it that middle school teachers are better than average? ;-)

Personally, I am very interested in attracting students into the computer technology career fields; and I believe the best chance for generating interest is with middle school aged kids. My message doesn’t seem to resonate as well with kids that are older.

Bill- yes to your last two questions ;)
It seems HS teachers focus on the content and forget the kid. They take advantage of the fact that the kids can sit quiet for longer periods of time and don’t engage them.
