“We call them children…”

“Very often, adults (parents and teachers) try to save youth from their suffering. We call them “children” and assume that if we do our jobs correctly, they won’t have problems or experience the hardship of figuring out how to live. We implicitly make it scary, and wrong, for students to be confused, to feel pain, or to experience failure. We don’t impart resilience. We don’t help them to see the beauty in the challenge and how wonderful that process can be.”
