Why I hate school but love education:

My 12 year old had to write a paper for English, to prepare for the NJASK. She had to follow highly specific rules and match the rubric in order to do well. She is a GOOD writer. Better than most high school students, she writes what she feels, what she knows. I asked the teacher how she did, "she did well, she is such a good writer, but she missed some of the rubric, she didn't use transition words (then, next etc.)." Makes me sick to my stomach. The exam graders will look at the first paragraph the last paragraph and a few sentences in the middle and determine if my child is proficient in English. That is Bull Crap!

I like Socol's quote. It simultaneously points out the limits of poor teaching and the internet. Just because the internet can "hand out packets" doesn't mean great teaching is being replaced. We have to ensure that this is made clear. We don't need to replace this teacher with a standardized curriculum that a computer can implement. We need to replace this teacher with an actual, decent teacher.

The student's going to be just fine. At least I really hope so. It's the others in the classroom who may be the real casualties.

Mr. Chamberlain,
Thank you for your kind comment. The subject of the video as per the contest rules was methods of motivating students to want to learn and thrive in the classroom. I chose my 3 methods (passion, discovery, and technology) through my experience by selecting 3 of the ways I believe I would personally learn better, and I explained how to try to implement them in the classroom on a daily basis.
