Even “King of the Hill” gets it

King of the Hill is not a show I watch, but I will support this one episode. It is a funny satire on Special Education and NCLB. Even if you normally would not watch the program, give it a shot.

Paul, now that was a well-spent 22 minutes. The world of Special Ed. has always been one of cognitive dissonance. Funny to see it so accurately displayed on TV. Except for the fact that some kids really do need the help.
I am publishing a book I wrote that touches on this subject, and is the story of the life of an veteran teacher in a middle school. It is called “You’re Never Too Old For Space Camp”.

I almost wrote an intro to the clip that stated that many kids need special ed. But even when I see a kid that needs it, too often they are just taught how to “do” worksheets “better.”

I’ve always wondered if all the worksheet assigning teachers thing it really does anything? I mean come on as an adult how often do we spend time filling out pointless busy work type work sheets. I’ve always enjoyed King of the Hill and their episodes dealing with schools in general hit it on the mark. Another great one is when Peggy Hill’s field trip to Mexico.

I swear they got the special needs classroom from our school. It looks just like what the kids do in there. And, they get to go on all the fieldtrips that the smart kids can’t go on. Like the ones to amusement parks. I had a kid who wanted to be a peer helper for one of these such trips. The sponsor told me he was real good with the kids on the roller coaster. Well, duh.
